What is Angiography?

What is Angiography?
Angiography is an X-ray examination of the blood vessels or chambers of the heart.
How long should I stay for Angiography?
Length of stay: Approximately 7 days for Angiography alone.
Recovery time: You may return to normal activity the day after the angiography.
Hospitalization: You may be discharged the same day, or may have to stay in the hospital.
How is surgery performed?
Surgeon inserts a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin area or arm. When it reaches the position, the dye which is visible by X-ray is injected.
What is the post-surgical care?
After the procedure, lying flat and applying pressure to the puncture site for several hours to avoid bleeding.
You'll need to drink a lot of water to flush the dye from your body. Avoid heavy activities for several days.
What are the possible risks and complications?
Complications could happen but very rare:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Trauma to the catheterized artery
  • Arrhythmias
  • Allergic to the dye or medication
  • Perforation of your heart or artery
  • Kidney damage
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Radiation exposure from the X-rays.
