What is Breast Reduction?
Breast Reduction is a surgical procedure designed to remove excessive fat, glandular tissue, and skin from large and pendulous breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. Breast Reduction is also performed in men for the correction of Gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue in men).

Why is Breast Reduction performed?
Breast reduction is sought by many women to relieve the physical restrictions which include painful strain on neck, shoulders and back caused by excessively heavy breasts -- a strain that can be so severe that it leads to chronic headaches, back and neck deformities, shoulder indentations, breathing problems, skin irritation and a variety of other medical problems and psychological problems like feeling self conscious and loosing of self confidence.
Breast reduction surgery, technically called mammaplasty, is usually performed for physical relief rather than for cosmetic reasons.

What is the outcome of Breast Reduction surgery?
Breast Reduction surgery has a 98% success rate, mostly patients are quite pleased after undergoing the Breast Reduction surgery. The procedure is quite successful at reducing the weight of very heavy breasts, making it easier to enjoy an active lifestyle. Many women find that this surgery relieves chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain. The primary benefit of the operation is functional, but you also get a breast lift, which enhances your appearance and improve your body image.

How is Breast Reduction done?
The incisions for breast reduction are similar to those used for the "keyhole-anchor breast lift" technique. This procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola are moved into their new position. The surgeon then brings the skin from both sides of the breast down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast. In some cases, techniques can be used that eliminate the long vertical part of the scar.
In most cases, the nipples remain attached to their blood vessels and nerves. However, if the breasts are very large or pendulous, the nipples and areolas may have to be completely removed and grafted into a higher position. Liposuction may be also be used in breast reduction.
The periareolar or doughnut reduction method may also be effective if there is not a large excess of skin. This method has the advantage of hidden scars; however it tends to flatten the breast shape a bit. In general, the more skin that is cut, the more it is possible to shape the breast and therefore, there is a trade-off between the extent of the scars and the extent of the shaping of the breast. Breast Reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may last for about three hours. The patient is discharged on the same day or in cases hospitalization for one day is required.

How to prepare for Breast Reduction?
You should discuss the changes that you would like to make in your appearance. Because this is a highly personal decision, you'll want to take time to discuss all of your concerns and desires, including what size and shape you would like your breasts to be.
During the consultation, your surgeon will explain the different options available to you. He/she will explain how your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin may affect the results. He/she will discuss the procedure in detail, explain the risks and limitations, and explain the type of anesthesia that will be used.
The surgeon will then examine and measure your breasts, and photograph them for reference during surgery and afterwards. He/she may also require you to have a mammogram (breast x-ray).
Be sure to ask all the questions you have about the surgery. Learn everything you can about your options, risks and benefits is the key to making an informed decision. All the routine screening tests including blood and urine examination, x-ray of chest as well as a mammogram will be preformed before Breast Reduction procedure.
You will be advised to eat a healthy diet and stop smoking at least 2 weeks prior to Breast Reduction surgery. You will also be advised to refrain from eating or drinking anything at least 12 hours prior to Breast Reduction surgery.

It is common to experience some pain and tenderness for the first few weeks after Breast Reduction surgery which will eventually subside. There may also be some degree of swelling or bruising. Your dressing will be removed in about 2 - 4 days however, your stitches will be removed after about 3 weeks following the Breast Reduction surgery.
You should avoid lifting anything heavy or pushing for the next several weeks although, you can resume your non-strenuous daily activities with caution within a week after Breast Reduction surgery. Complete healing generally takes about 3 months after Breast Reduction surgery.
