How is the surgery performed?
ACL surgery may require a graft replaces the torn ligament. Graft might be taken from the patient's kneecap according to the attending surgeon. The procedure is performed with an arthroscope with only small incisions. The graft is implanted into holes drilled in the tibia and femur, then secured to bone with screws or staples. General or epidural anesthesia may be used.
No graft is required for the repair. The surgeon sutures the existing tendon and ensures it is attached properly. The surgical cut is closed with sutures, staples, or metal pins, and a bandage is applied.

To reduce swelling, elevate leg and apply ice pack. Bathing or showering can be resumed 3 days after surgery and avoid exercise other than physical therapy until approved by the attending surgeon. Physical rehabilitation after ACL surgery may take several months to a year.
