How is surgery performed?
It is performed under general or epidural anesthesia. Surgeon makes an incision over hip and thigh. The top end of the thigh bone will be removed and a ball on a stem will be placed into the thigh bone. The hip socket will be hollowed out and an artificial socket will be placed into it. The artificial part of the thigh bone can then fit into this socket. Then the surgeon will close the wound and cover it with a dressing. The procedure takes up to two hours.

What is the post-surgical care?
A special pillow may be placed between the legs to hold the new joint still and help prevent dislocation. On the first day, the patient may have to wear special pads, attached to an intermittent compression pump. The pump inflates the pads and encourages healthy blood flow in legs and helps to prevent Deep Venous Thrombosis. The patient may also use compression stockings to help maintain circulation. The operated leg may be a slightly different in length. Sometimes a raised shoe on the shorter side is mandatory. Few weeks after surgery, when the patient would regain full hip movement, probably resume driving. At this time, the surgeon may allow the patient to return to work, depending on degree of physical activity involved in patient occupation.
